When gayness was out in open

When gayness was out in open, not a matter of guilt

Devdutt Pattanaik

In his Navagraha Kirti, the great 19th century Carnatic music composer, Muthuswami Dikshitar describes Budh (the planet mercury) as Napumsakam or one who is not quite male or female. He alludes to a story in the Puranas where Brihaspati (the planet Jupiter) discovers that his wife Tara (the goddess of stars) is pregnant with the child of her lover, Chandra (the Moon-god). He curses the love child to be born neuter. Budh later marries Ila, a man who becomes a woman when he accidentally trespasses an enchanted grove. From that union springs the Chandra-vamsa, or the lunar dynasty of kings. So says the Mahabharata.

As in the story of Ila, Indian lore is full of tales where men turn into women and women turn into men. Narada falls into a pond, becomes a woman, discovers the meaning of worldly delusion or maya. Shiva bathes in the Yamuna, becomes a gopi, a milkmaid, so that he can dance the raas-leela with Krishna — an idea that has inspired the temple of Gopeshwarji in Vrindavan. At a short distance from Ahmedabad, is the temple of Bahucharji, the rooster-riding goddess, once where it is said there was a pond that turned a woman into a man, a mare into a horse and a bitch into a dog. The pond has dried up, but women still visit this shrine seeking a male child. They seek the blessings of bhagats (some call them hijras) who though men believe they are women and choose to live their life wearing a sari.

Near Pondicherry, in the village of Koovagam, every year the transgendered alis dance and sing in memory of an event that took place during mythic times. Aravan, the son of Arjuna and his serpent wife, Ulupi, had to be sacrificed to ensure victory of the Pandavas at Kurukshetra. But he refused to die without a taste of marriage. As no woman was willing to marry a man doomed to die, Krishna took a female form, Mohini, became Aravan’s wife, spent a night with him and then wailed for him as widow when he was beheaded.

In the Valmiki Ramayana, there are descriptions of Rakshasa women who kiss women on Ravana’s bed on whose lips lingers the taste of their master. Krittivasa Ramayana is the story of two widows who drink a magic potion and, in the absence of their husband, make love to each other and end up bearing a child without bones (traditionally believed to be the contribution of semen).

How does one interpret these stories? Are they gay stories? They certainly shatter the conventional confines of gender and sexuality. Ancient Indian authors and poets without doubt imagined a state where the lines separating masculinity and femininity often blurred and even collapsed. Though awkward, these were not stray references. Such tales were consistent and recurring, narrated matter-of-factly, without guilt or shame. Such outpouring has its roots in Indian metaphysics.

As the wheel of rebirth turns, Indians have always believed, the soul keeps casting off old flesh and wrapping itself anew. Depending on one’s karma, one can be reborn as a tree, as a rock, as a bird, a beast, a man, a woman, a man with a woman’s heart, a woman with a man’s heart, even as a god or demon…endless possibilities exist in the infinite cosmos. The wise see masculinity and femininity as ephemeral robes that wrap the sexless genderless soul. The point is not to get attached to the flesh, but to celebrate its capabilities, discover its limitations, and finally transcend it.

The question before us is: does the human mind have the empathy to include gender and sexual ambiguity in civil human society? It does. In every Yuga new rules come into being that redefine world order. Mahabharata mentions a Yuga when there was no marriage — women were free to go with any man they chose. This changed when Shvetaketu instituted the marriage laws. We have lived through a Yuga where we left unchallenged laws of old imperial masters that dehumanised and invalidated sexual minorities. This has to…

Clinton on Indian Music

US PRESIDENT CLINTON TO THE JOINT SESSION OF INDIAN PARLIAMENT: I have read that one of the unique qualities of Indian classical music is its elasticity. The composer lays down a foundation, a structure of melodic and rhythmic arrangements, but the player has to improvise within that structure to bring the raga* to life.

Social media and Mainstream press have different answers: Roy Greenslade

Social media and the mainstream press embrace different news agendas, and the former have much shorter attention spans than the latter when dealing with news items.

They are among the major findings of New Media, Old Media, a report by the Pew Research Centre’s Project for Excellence in Journalism that studied a year’s worth of media coverage of news stories.

It points out that just as consumers don’t stay long on any website, social media “doesn’t stay long on any one story.”

On blogs, 53% of the lead stories in a given week stay on the list no more than three days. On Twitter, that is true of 72% of lead stories, and more than half (52%) are on the list for just 24 hours.

As for the differing agendas, the study found that “blogs still heavily rely on the traditional press – and primarily just a few outlets within that – for their information.”

More than 99% of the stories linked to in blogs came from legacy outlets such as newspapers and broadcast networks. And just four – the BBC, CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post – accounted for fully 80% of all links.

But Twitter is less tied to traditional media, with only 50% of links to those four news outlets and 40% to web-only news sites. One other interesting finding:

Each social media platform also seems to have its own personality and function… bloggers gravitated toward stories that elicited emotion, concerned individual or group rights or triggered ideological passion...

Social media tend to home in on stories that get much less attention in the mainstream press. And there is little evidence… of the traditional press then picking up on those stories in response.

So, for the moment at least, the traditional media is showing little interest in the social media’s agenda. I’d expect that to change by the time the next study in this area is conducted. http://ow.ly/1R3o8

Love – Brain & culture

“I think what we take away from this is that love is not merely a cultural construction,” Dr. Aron said. “What the study does suggest is that love is a powerful force in human life. What is going on at the deep level of the brain is pretty much the same everywhere. But of course how we talk and think about it, what we do to show it to others, etc., may well be shaped by culture.” http://ow.ly/1Qsgc

cultural differences in how love is expressed don’t change the brain’s neurological reaction to romantic love. The scans showed that love lights up the brain in the same manner, regardless of ethnic background.

Google TV – some hope for the human brain

.

.

I have spoken and written on how Television is the least  challenging activity for the human brain and exposing children to Television can actually lead to retardation (read How to get a slackjawed look?).  I wanted to read this fiery book called ‘Glass Teat’ by Harlan Ellison but somehow never could  get my hands on it.  But I saw his videos on Metcafe, man!!!!! he breathes fire and I really liked it. I really can say this with too much of confidence, but I think Google was the best thing to happen after a long long time.  It deals with words – lots of words. Felt it brought the words back to reckoning.  So I when I heard about Google TV, I was a bit taken back _ You too Google_ kind of feeling crept in.

So I decided to do some study on Google TV and you will find the jotting below this post.

Well, I think Google TV is good simply because its interactive and is a platform for innovation, which would mean that the viewer has the power in his hands to decide, hey now you have android phones as remote _ check it out. The options are so complex that he really has to think hard.   Many thought that remote gave the power to the viewer. haaa haaaa remote is dumber that TV .. its frickin dumb with just some dumb numbers on it.  But the remote was actually was the first step towards the weaning away of the dumb view from the glass teat.   There was a total invasion to make idiots out of human race.

Google TV in my first cut view, integrates internet and fragments entertainment and enlarges the canvas.  You will actually end up spending more time on searching rather than viewing.  Which I think is very good.  Searching is a better activity than dumb viewing.  But when the speed increases one may actually end up using the forward button to skip  the crap to get to the point.  Now I quote from the Google TV blog “This is an incredibly exciting time — for TV watchers, for developers and for the entire TV ecosystem. By giving people the power to experience what they love on TV and on the web on a single screen, Google TV turns the living room into a new platform for innovation. …..”

Google announces the new Google TV platform players like Sony, Logitech, Intel, dish Network and Best Buy backing it. Its built on android and features the chrome browser with Flash Player. Google claims to bring “the web to your TV and your TV to the web.”

Google TV is on an Android platform that can run many products, and it can run all Android apps (provided it does not require phone hardware). Well you still need the cable and the satellite box.  It will have remotes with QWERTY keyboard the coolest thing is that you can use android phones as a remote.

Google TV uses search to give you an easy and fast way to navigate to television channels, websites, apps, shows and movies. For example, already know the channel or program you want to watch? Just type in the name and you’re there. Want to check out that funny YouTube video on your 48” flat screen? It’s just a quick search away. If you know what you want to watch, but you’re not sure where to find it, just type in what you’re looking for and Google TV will help you find it on the web or on one of your many TV channels. If you’d rather browse than search, you can use your standard program guide, your DVR or the Google TV home screen, which provides quick access to all of your favorite entertainment so you’re always within reach of the content you love most. • Developers can start optimizing their websites for Google TV .
  • Soon after launch, the Google TV SDK and web APIs for TV will be released to help developers build even richer applications and distribute them through Android Market.
  • Companies — like Jinni.com and Rovi — are at the leading edge of innovation in TV technology. Jinni.com is a next-generation TV application working to provide semantic search, personalized recommendation and social features for Google TV across all sources of premium content available to the user. Rovi is one of the world’s leading guide applications. We’re looking forward to seeing all of the ways developers will use this new platform.
  • Sony and Logitech will put Google TV inside of televisions, Blu-ray players and companion boxes. These devices will go on sale this fall, and will be available atBest Buy stores nationwide. You can sign up here to get updates on Google TV availability.

Every one needs a summary.  My entire view of this is based on how the human brain will shift.  I was very worried on TV churning out idiots.  That was a season of dumbness.  We have gone past that stage.  The true era of knowledge will soon happen – I hope.  Lets watch this development keenly.  Hope its not just another wave – a google wave.

The caste wheel moves

Caste Hindus leave village, settle down at nearby hillock #thehindu

When I read about this morning and i was recalling the old times when the caste Hindus literally had banished the ordinary people to the hills, they eventually ran to the hills and mountains (called tribals now) or were kept out of cities (marginalized)  the huge wheel is turning.  I have written about this earlier in “Splash of red and hope of mankind” and also in my post “Indians and back end jobs”

Excerpts from The Hindu:

TIRUNELVELI: Caste Hindus of Panthapuli near Sankarankovil left their hamlet and have settled down in a hillock nearby in protest against the preparations being made by the Dalits to celebrate the village temple festival.

Following differences of opinion between the Dalits and other Caste Hindus of Panthapuli over offering prayers in the 100-year old Kannanallur Mariamman Temple, the Dalits, who were allegedly prevented from entering the place of worship, filed a case against it in 2000. Though the trial court at Sankarankovil gave its verdict in favour of the Dalits, the respondents preferred an appeal, which is pending before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.

Meanwhile, the district administration, which tried its level best to bring about an amicable solution to this problem, was forced to seal the temple on September 27, 2008 after both sides refused to come down from their stance. Condemning it, the Dalits left Panthapuli on December 12, 2008 and settled down at Kaarisaaththaan hillock near their hamlet and returned home after three days following assurance from the officials that they would be allowed to enter the temple and to offer prayers.

Protesting it, the Caste Hindus left the village and settled down at Yettisery hillock and returned home within 24 hours. Against this backdrop, the temple was opened on December 24, 2008 in the presence of large number of police personnel and the Dalits were allowed to offer prayers even as others stayed away from the event.

On resolutions

Eleanor Valentina J writing on New Year Resolutions for Chennai Insights talks about resolutions made but seldom kept. Its a joke now, it is also said “Resolutions are made to be broken”. I have made many a new year resolutions, short or writing them with blood I have tried every bleedy thing. End of it all, I come out weaker and my pursuit of overcoming an issue has always resulted in being enslaved, resulting in the failure to keep the resolutions. So I just gave up.

But resolutions are good.

I have been living a life with some patterns, some are good and some are terrible. So when a resolution is made it often focuses on resolving the terrible ones, ‘I want to quit drinking/smoking’ may be one of them. The mess starts over here. How do I quit a habit? A habit is woven within my being it has wrapped around my goodness too and has become part of me. Its like trying to untie a tangled up wire or thread. Can I handle it separately? How do I handle it?

Prayer, they say, can change things. It sure changes the one who prays, by strengthening the strong and weakening the weak. But then the weakness, or the thorn can also become a strength in its weakest form for it said ‘let the weak say I am strong’. So why should anyone try to shed the weaknesses and become strong? Ain’t it better to work the weakness through the strength and vice versa. And in prayer understand to operate the thorns creatively.

I believe resolutions must be pushed to a much higher level. It must factor the strengths and weakness within each of us to embark on something that is far more far reaching and impact driving. In other words it must be outward force or a centrifugal force, a power that radiates to the uttermost corners of the world. Only such resolutions are meaningful.

Mere mortals who prefer to engage with the sandcastles on the beach side the real ones either take upon themselves to handle the rough seas or build on a rock solid foundation.

How can I explain this away?

Getting absorbed by a group so naturally is quite a rare thing. Rotary, to me was, belonged to analog times so never really got excited about it, though I understand that they undertake social initiatives. So my interaction with the Rotary Club of Chennai, Kilpauk, on 21st may 2010 was my first one. Samuel Eddy invited me to talk for 10 minutes, the talk should be ‘fun and informative’, he said. So naive as I was, I deduced that Rotary is not fun. So I was getting prepared for a formal iron clad evening at the Taj Connemara.

I had eat my socks. I have not seen such clean and fantastic fun for a long long time. And then I had to quickly rework my mental jottings of what wanted to talk about.. for I knew I would fail miserably if I attempt to be funny.
Hari Ratan, the self confessed ADHD and dyslexia and my senior in school #respect #big respect for my elders.. was fun collecting fines from people. He was like an accusative verb (wren & martin take a walk please).

Ramasubramanian Alwarsamy and me were the guests and we never felt that way. They were so kind that they even listened to me speak and said they liked it. Some even came and spoke to me individually. After some shots of whiskey, and with some avalanche of old memories gushing in after meeting up with Velu Muthu and Srivatsan, i was a bit overwhelmed. Off went a small pack with me tagging along to continue the party at Mani Iyers Think Pad. wowieee.. I was totally de – mubbu-fied. After messing around with some music into the night, it was time to go. Then started my party.

It was time to walk the talk. Me and my big mouth, I had spoken about taking up challenges as opposed to hard work, and competing without strife… Ganesh & Karthikeya mango match….working with the weakness through the strength etc etc…

I was my turn to whistle and enjoy pushing this monster of the bike of mine in the middle of the night. Well I tried doing it with great joy (thaliva take the challenge) when a guy in a funny bike overtook me and turned back and volunteered to tow me to the Petrol bunk.

I came home with this fantastic lesson “when you take up challenges with joy there is many to stand with you, besides you, carry you, help you, bless you, fund you, care for you, advise you, love you, and even tow you”.

Post my interaction at Rotary, all those little niggling fears and doubts that I had about committing my time and effort to work with children in the most challenged conditions seemed to have been towed away. Taking about towing I must thank Samuel Eddy, the ship guy, the self professed king maker and the guy who invited me for this. UP WELLING is a great feeling, it came gift wrapped to me.

Lets pay for our privacy

Okay!!!! u have heard of this “there is nothing called free lunch”. Well then why are you using Gmail, Facebook, Twitter etc.? Honestly they dont come free, as we believe it to be. For we know not that these huge portals are billing our broad band provider and having us pay for it without us knowing it. Call it conspiracy of sorts (personally I cant handle that word)
So collectively we can do something about. Its time we do it

Google, innocent thumb sucking kids.. look at them they look like innocent school boys playing with marbles in their pockets. Thats the outside

Now look a the founders of facebook founder Mark-Zuckerberg. Doesn’t he look like corporate dude who has got a pay hike while his friends got the pink slips?

Now look at this angel below who is actually making real stew for you – free of cost.

Our eyes ahhhhhhh!!!!! so bloody deceptive. Now take a look at this video on how google controls our lives.

Its just a fun video.. dont take it seriously.. may lead to severe constipation.

Seriously its time we do something about this .. lets just pay these guys and guard our privacy. That old saw “there are no free lunches” still stands good. Dining with the devil is a lot safer.

Foursquare

Iam not a major foodie but I thought of joining Foursquare to write about some absolutely whacky roadside joints. The guy who sells porridge for Rs 7 near the Fruit Shop on Greams Road at Kellys and the yummy breakfast at Annanagar opp to Sundaram Medical. Somebody has to talk about it right?  I will do it.
