Is Sticking better than being on the Roll??

Talking about being consistent and being loyal you are sure to be confronted with this silly proverb “Rolling Stones gather no moss”  yuck!!!!!!! over the years this little stupid innocous line has eroded my self esteem and made me feel like a pebble.  Then one day I decided to deconstruct it (if that usage is right) or debunk it and flush it down the tube.

Now to begin with let me show you  how a stone with moss looks like

This dumb stationary stone that has parked it self in a place and managed to have a broad bottom and allowed moss to creep and crawl  all around it.  Well this is what most people prefer of their children and employees – Flat bottomed and clumsy.

I wish I had seen this picture earlier, honestly I thought MOSS was something real real good, apparently it is supposed to mean that only a stationary stone will allow material stuff and comforts to stick on to you so that you can die in peace.  By hell will a rolling stone ever allow moss to come anywhere near it, at best while rolling it will crush the moss and if perchance a stationary stone with moss all around happens to be on its rolling way…… it will knock the hell of it and roll on.

Now comes  the sage statement.  Rolling would not mean quitting – its not about quitting jobs and moving on… its all about being on the roll and not being stationary.  This proverb has oft been engrained in many a minds and so intricately woven inside that people get on to a job, and quickly develop a flat bottom and plonk themselves in a place – come hell or high water.  Doing nothing they achieve atrophy so goddamn fast and yet they sport a smile of contentement and pass on this secret to their children  “You know what my son,  rolling stones gather no mass blah blah blah “  And in the interview panel with a grim look they scan the resume and mutter ‘ Well you have been all around the place… hmmm !!! why havnt you stuck to one place? ”  But Sir…. I have been ….. ” NO NO dont tell me anything, did you know you are so inconsitent and unreliable ?  who would want you ?  you may never stick on you see… ”  But Sir… I will do what I have to do and kept moving  ” Is it? So you can do ?  do you realise that sticking to something is more important than DOING ?  havnt your parents ever told you that Rolling stones gathers no moss? ”

Most performers are restless, with nimble feet…  this proverb has been effectively used by the slotful and lazy to pin the performers down. I may not say its Conspiracy of the sloth.. its just plain silly.

Vinod, my friend, was talking about Grandpa Simon.  Here is the story.  Year 1931, Wynad was a forest, a typical forest with all its dangers and then there was this huge plague and people were dying.  Only the toughest survived.  Grandpa Simon and his friend decided to go to Wynad, to probably test their mettle.  People were moving out when these two friends decide to got there.

For Rs.36 he picks up 100 acres of land and decides to live there.  Why only 100 acres and not 1000 acres, his grandson asks.  Oh!!!! the thumb rule is you have to possess enough land that you can cover by walk in one day, he says.

Life was not easy.  The fruits of his labor lay hanging ripe and juicy and he children and children’s children are able to eat of it.

Water for Elephants a book by Sara Gruen, has a strand of the biblical Jacob’s story running along.  Jacob Jankowski, the protagonist, studying Vet Science in Ivy League has his world crumbling all over after his parents die in an accident.  You can read summary of the story here LINK

The life of Jacob was tough.  But what I like about this guy is his honesty and his lack of tact or deception, unlike the Biblical Jacob.  We only once, during his conversation with Uncle Al, does he display some shrewd thinking.

Jacob is 93 yrs of age as he narrates this story, he is under assisted living, in other words under nursing care.  His eldest son Simon is 73, (no link with Uncle Simon mentioned above) he forgets to take his dad to the circus.

As I was combining both these stories, one thing stood out is the longevity of Jacob and Uncle Simon,  its their ability to take on challenge and fear head on that pays off.  At the age of 93, Jacob is still keen on taking up employment in challenging situations.

Amazing

Anointing with Navratana Oil

My son has this craze for this blood red oil, he applies it on his hair and soaks in its chillness. I get to see bliss in his countenance.  As for me I detest that smell.  Somehow  I abhor stuff that gives one an instantaneous kick.  The smell arggggghhh!!!! it puts me off.

But then you must not have a closed mind on such things right?  One cant hold on to the good old coconut oil for long.
We have to experiment and progress.

So I picked up this bottle of Navaratna and wanted to check its contents, the print was too small and my eyes even with those spectacles refused to decipher the squiggles.  So I asked for help which was at hand in the form of my daughter who sat besides me.  “Vandy can you read this for me please?”  I pleaded.  And she went thus:

Lata Kasturi, Kakoli, Brahmi, Sailaja, Kapoor Kachari, Gandhamatra, Gatella , Kunch, Muramansi , Gulab Phool, Benamul, Mustha, Kesut , , Karpur, Pudina Ka Phool, Pudina Ka Tel, Surasar .

I did not understand a thing.  Midway through my mind wandered, I recalled the times I used to sit in a Pentecostal Church (went there for 35 yrs)  listening to what they called ‘tongues’…. Dejavu time for me.

I was amazed how a simple stupid Red bottle of Hair oil has so much of similarity to what they called speaking in ‘tongues’

Well Well.. dont get me wrong .. Anointing the head with oil .. so what if its Navratna Oil.

Now finally if you really want a quick fix to all your problems I strongly recommend a good Navratna Oil bath. Try it.
